DIY activities at home

If your kid is curious by nature and enjoys hands-on activities, consider DIY games! It's the perfect alternative if you want to have a fun time without leaving your home.

Below are three DIY children's activity ideas for you to discover!

“Can stilts” : homemade stilts

If your child is a budding acrobat, try making can stilts!

For this DIY activity, it couldn't be simpler: cut two long and sturdy strings and make a hole on each side of the bottom of the can (the holes should face each other and be at the same height). Then, thread the string through one of the holes you just created and tie the end inside the can. Next, thread the other end of the string through the second hole. Flip the can over and let your child place their foot on it to adjust the strings if necessary. Ta-da! You now have homemade stilts at a low cost!

“The Yogurt Pots”

A classic game often played at children's fairs and originally using tin cans, this activity is perfect for birthdays and afternoons with friends.

The goal of the game? Knock down as many pots as possible with a given number of balls or topple the entire stack with the fewest shots possible. In the first scenario, the number of knocked-down pots is counted, and the player who knocks down the most wins. In the second scenario, the number of balls used to topple the entire stack is counted, and the player who uses the fewest balls wins.

For a DIY version, it's quite simple! Gather some empty and previously washed yogurt pots and have a "crafting" moment with your child. Invite them to decorate the yogurt pots by drawing funny faces on them and challenge them to create the most original character possible! If you need inspiration, don't hesitate to browse Pinterest ? The DIY version of the topple the pots ball will only take a few seconds: fill one sock with...another sock! This will give you a lightweight ball to avoid any damage if you're playing the game indoors.

As you can see, with a few yogurt pots, two socks, and you're good to go: you have a DIY topple the pots game worthy of a carnival!

Team activities : to foster collaboration

Does your child not enjoy playing solo and prefer team games.

In addition to our ready-made treasure hunt, consider original team games that are ideal for developing social skills such as listening and collaboration.

“Honey Hunt “ : a fun ideas

This game is played with two teams: one represents the bees, and the other represents the bears.

The two groups are lined up, facing each other. Several scarves (around 4 or 5) representing honey are placed in the center. Before starting, both teams must establish the boundaries of their camps. For example, you can place an object on the ground: if a participant crosses this boundary, they exit their camp and enter the "arena." The goal of the game? The team of bears must collect the scarves, or honey (a coveted treat for this mammal), from the arena and bring them back to their camp without being tagged/touched by the bees. If a bee manages to tag a bear, that bear is eliminated. Vice versa, if the bee exits their camp but fails to tag a bear, they are eliminated. The game continues until all members of both teams are eliminated or until all the scarves have been brought to the bears' camp. This activity helps develop children's teamwork while engaging them in a sporty and fun game!

“The Sculptor”

Children play in pairs in this original activity!

One child is designated as the "sculptor," while their teammate represents a ball of modeling clay. The "sculptor" manipulates the other child to put them in the desired position, creating a work of art. Once the "sculpture" is complete, it is covered with a blanket, a throw, or a sheet, as you prefer. When all the teams have finished their work, the sculptors uncover the "artworks" of the others and visit the "museum" they have created! Encourage the children to explain their artistic choices to the other guests and comment on the "sculptures" of others by expressing their feelings. After the first round, the roles are reversed! There are no winners or losers here, just a game that breaks the norm and teaches children to develop their creativity while introducing them to art.

As you can see, when it comes to organizing activities for children, the ideal is to adapt the game to their personality. With our valuable advice, you will now become experts in the field! Good luck (even though you won't need it anymore) ?
